Gonadotropins (Gonal-F, Follisitm, Menopur. Luveris etc.) are injectable fertility drugs that help induce egg development. Gonadotropins are taken as a daily injection and the dose is usually modified based upon the number of eggs that develop.
Gonadotropins boost fertility because instead of one egg developing (as in a natural cycle) they induce multiple eggs to develop. Gonadotropins are stronger than Clomid so the success rate is usually higher. While gonadotropins yield a higher success rate there are increased risks. The risk of multiple and high order multiple (triplets, quads, etc.) pregnancy with gonadotropins is significantly elevated compared with Clomid. This is especially true for young women. In women less than 35 years old the risk of twins can be 20% or more and the risk of high order multiples can be 5-10%.
While caution must be used, gonadotropins are a solid treatment option for many people.
Once the ovaries are stimulated an artificial insemination can be performed to further increases the chance of becoming pregnant. Gonadotropins are also used during the ovarian stimulation phase of IVF.
